Scholarship Committee Report

We are in the 8^th year of the KEMCAANA Scholarship Program. This year we will be giving 32 scholarships in the amount of 1500 Rs. per month. The contributions are invested with Smith Barney and the scholarship is being paid from the income and appreciation. The investment committee of KEMCAANA Executive counsel oversees the investments. Our present goal is to increase the number of scholarships to 50 per year and increase the monthly amount to 3000 Rs. per month to help the students cope with increased expenses due to inflation.

The scholarships are awarded by a selection committee consisting of professors at KEMU and are based on the student’s academic achievement and financial needs. I have interviewed many of the scholarship recipients over the past 6 years and have come across several heartfelt stories. One of the students recently told me that his sister had scored very high marks in the intermediate board exam but that the family finances were already stretched to the limit to put him through KEMU. So the family had decided to hold the sister back from joining medical school. KEMCAANA Scholarship came in handy and enabled the family to have his sister pursue her goals for higher education. There are many similar situations that still exist in Pakistan.
